A lot of the musicals I will feature on my page are usually ones that I chose randomly by rolling some dice and picking from Wikipedia, honestly. This is one that fits in that category for sure. I've never heard of this one before, which is odd given the fact it's pretty recent. It's a musical based off of a podcast, which is definitely interesting. The only thing I can think of that's similar is 21 Chump Street, but I have to admit, I'm not much of a podcast listener - or serious podcasts, at least- so I can't find it in myself to go and listen to the original thing, but if it's a good musical, it'll hold up on it's own based on the music and the story told through that. It started off reminding me of a Starkid musical in the sense that it set the scene and it didn't follow the scheme of typical musicals, if that makes sense?
When I got to song 3, I have to admit, I jumped because I was like, "IS THAT HADES???" and in fact, it is. That's cool!! I did have to try to force myself to separate him in this musical from Hadestown, which I found pretty difficult because the musical styles are similar? Maybe I just haven't listened to Hadestown in a while and I'm misremembering it, but it did feel very similar, at least for his songs.
There were some songs like Irene After Dentist and I Know This Girl that made me feel like it would have been better experienced on stage or in person, or something like that... it just felt so incredibly out of place, especially after the song prior. Overall, it's a nice musical, I would absolutely love to see it on stage if it ever made it to a stage production!! It's not something I can see myself listening to over and over again like other musicals I like, but it's absolutely something I recommend everyone listen to at least once!!
As big of a fan of Sutton Foster as I am, this is one of her works that I haven't actually listened to. I've wanted to for a while, though, so I'm excited to see if I like it! I feel like there was one time I heard, like, one? of the songs in passing? I can't remember well enough, clearly, but regardless, I'm going into it with an open mind. Very seldom do I DNF musicals, so I'm hopeful I won't DNF this one.
It doesn't start off very... good? In my opnion, I guess? I dunno... It's very flip flop of a bop and then something I can just... enjoy once for what it is and then it's forgettable.
I will say, the song Here Alone is very beautiful, and I think it deserves a lot more love than what it gets.
Overall, it was a fine musical, it was't something I would suggest to many people, but for the select audience that likes musicals that border on classical and modern, this is great! Unfortunately, this one didn't hit that much for me... sad day for me.
